Absorption of Bird Droppings in Automotive Clearcoats

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

One of the worst things for the clear coat on your automobile is bird-droppings. Just ask any auto detailer, car washer or automotive refinisher at any body shop and they will tell you all about it.

Bird-droppings need to be cleaned off a car quickly as they can be just as damaging as egg or even brake fluids or battery acid. If you park your car under a tree and there are birds in that tree it makes sense to have a healthy multi-coat wax job on your car to protect it. I recommend waxing your car at least once per month after you have strong base coat consisting of four or five coats already on it. This will insure that the bird droppings can be wiped right off without soaking thru the clear coat.

Sometimes when I look at these bird-droppings and study them; don’t laugh I have spend 27 years in the car washing, aircraft detailing and truck cleaning business; I wonder what on Earth these birds are eating. No wonder they are getting bird flu, as their droppings are so corrosive it is not even funny.

Since it takes a couple of days for most bird droppings to etch the paint of a clear coat it is important to get it off as soon as possible. Other wise those chemicals of the bird droppings will slowly eat into the clear coat and combine with it and once they do it is simply too late as the damage is done permanently. Consider all this in 2006.
